Charles Barkley left Auburn before his final year and was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984. He was selected just two slots behind Michael Jordan and joined with a team with such greats as Julius Erving and Moses Maline. Barkley learned, during his first year with the Sixers, to manage the weight problem that had plagued him through his college year and on average he scored 14 points per game in the regular season. In his second year with the Sixers, Barkley became the leading rebounder and #2 scorer, and his third sason with the team, Julius Erving announced his retirement, making Barkley the 76ers franchise player. In essence, Barkley was the "face" of the 76ers. Sir Charles played with the Sixers until the 1991-92 season when he wore the number 32 in honor of Magic Johnson who had recently announced his HIV-positive status. In 1992, Barkley was traded out of the city of Brotherly Love to the Phoenix Suns, but it was during his time with Philly, that Barkley became a household name. He was one of a select few NBA players to become a Kenner "Starting Lineup" action figure and had a signature shoe line with Nike. Now in 2007, Nike pays tribute to Barkley with a series of shoes highlighting the phases of his career. The Nike Air Force One Mid Premium, from the Philly 76ers Pack, carries the signature Sixers colors and a unique fusion of the Air Force 1 design and with the tongue and strap of the Nike Air Alpha Force II, a shoe often associated with Barkley.
