Nike Dunk High Black Fives. Special Edition for the Brooklyn Smart Set, 1907-08 Colored Basketball World Champions
The Smart Set Athletic Club was founded in 1905 and is credited with assembling the first formally organized all-black basketball team which debuted in 1907. Later that year the team joined the Olympian Athletic League along with the St. Christopher Club and Marathon Athletic Club. SZmart Set members came from a tight-knit clique of well-educated, affluent, "old-money" African Americans who resided in the predominantly white Stuyvesant Heights section of Brooklyn. These players weren't just prima donnas; the teams' complete dominance of other black fives earned them the nickname "The Grave Diggers". The Smart Set Athletic Club won the Olympian Athletic League Championship title during its only two seasons and also won the first two Colored World Basketball Championships for 1907-08 and 1908-09.
The Nike Vandal and Vandal Supreme, produced from 1984 to 1987 is one of the latest retro basketball shoes to be released. Nike has reissued several of their of hi-top classics such as the Blazer and the Vandal. These shoes are most popular with adults reliving the glorious days of youth. Girls like them for their tomboy cool factor, and the younger generation is learning just how cool it can be to learn their history with these retro styles.
